No, it's not because I look like Nikki Blonsky. Okay, maybe it is a little...

As I mentioned before, I have been hit with the reality (repeatedly...this is an ongoing thing and it never gets any easier, I tell you) that I am not a great connoisseur of movies. Well, I'm a list maker. I make lists for everything, both mentally and physically. But I always get stumped when I try to figure out what my favorite movie is. I've pretty much always just picked one and stuck with it for the sake of having a favorite. Well, this hasn't necessarily been concerning me lately, but it came to me out of nowhere a week or two ago. This was a very exciting moment for me because it all just made so much sense. Except that all y'all are going to judge me pretty hardcore. David, the one person in my family who actually chose to love me, continually judges me. I think he likes it deep down inside, but feels like he needs to pretend to dislike it so much solely for the conflict.
Anyway, my favorite movie is absolutely Hairspray, and let me tell you why.

Reason #1: The music. I love the music so much. I dance. I sing. I squeal when it comes on unexpectedly.

Reason #2: I love movies where the gap between black people and white people is bridged. I love it when these two races come together and form lasting relationships. I am so not even kidding... Remember the Titans was my favorite movie for most of my high school career. And I LOVE Blindside. David thinks this stems from the fact that I thought I was black when I was a little girl. Now, I don't know about that. All I know is that I like what I like, okay?

Reason #3:

James Marsden, you beast!

Reason #4: The fat girl gets the guy. And let's face it, this has become my life story.

Reason #5: John Travolta dressed in drag. I had no idea I could love John Travolta so much. That man moves while wearing heels in ways I can't move barefoot.

Reason #6: I don't know why, but I'm always more inclined to love things when Queen Latifah is involved. I think this might go back to my inner-black woman, but I just really love her. I basically wish she was one of my best friends.

Reason #7: Two words: Christopher Walken.

Reason #8: All of the little tongue-in-cheek lyrics and lines throughout the movie. "Nice white kids who like to lead the way. Then, once a month we have our Negro Day!"

Reason #9: Again, James Marsden. (I promise that I am in love with David.)

Reason #10: I love all the dancing and singing. And all the pretty dresses the girls wear on The Corny Collins Show.

Judge me or join me, but this movie makes me so happy! It has a good moral and it's basically the best to sing along to. Now that I've explained why I love Hairspray so so much, I cannot encourage you strongly enough to go watch this movie again and reevaluate your opinion of it. Or come watch it with me. My enthusiasm is unmatched!

  1. Really? Hairspray?

    ...

You did make some valid points in your list of why you love the movie so much. And, for the most part, I agree. (I don't like the music, actually. As musicals go, the whole thing feels more forced than... I was going to say "natural," but there's nothing natural about a movie where "the performers will periodically dance about and burst into song"--name that movie!)

Well, I guess you could have picked worse. At least you didn't say "High School Musical." If you had, I might have been inclined to take back what I said in the comments portion of your last post.

    But really? Hairspray? hmm.

  2. I just have to say that I watch this movie about once a week and am so glad that I'm not alone in my love for it. I blast it at full volume while I do my laundry and whatnot and sing along at the top of my lungs. It never fails to make me happy. And every single reason you listed are reasons on my list as well. I'd also just like to add, James Marsden. Yep. That should about sum it up.

  3. Not into Hairspray. I never use it. It's not good for my long locks. Ba-dum,ching! But really, I don't.

My favorite movie is a tie between Little Miss Sunshine and The Burbs. Have you seen them? SEE THEM.

  4. Goodness, I haven't seen this movie in forever. Enjoyed it, though. Except, the Christopher Walken/John Travolta love song kind of weirded me out, lol.

  5. I know I have already commented. But I'm commenting again.

Okay. I have only seen this movie once, and I didn't like it. At all. This may have been because I saw it in a theater in Provo filled with High School Musical lovers. Jana really wanted to see it, though, so Sarah and I consented. I will admit that I already hated it before I even saw it, which isn't really fair.

I have just looked it up on Rotten Tomatoes (which for a movie snob is a website I go to often and rely on for reviews). They give Hairspray a 91%, see:
    http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/hairspray/

91 percent! 9/10! This is a higher rating than Forrest Gump, Breakfast at Tiffany's, and even Black Swan, and it tied with Little Miss Sunshine! Which tells me that perhaps I need to see this movie again, but in the company of non-teeny bopper twenty somethings. Perhaps we should watch it on our visit? Bring it to the temple and we'll watch it on Sarah's laptop. Which she will inevitably be bringing.

  6. Sarah- We will fix this problem for you when you come visit.

Alicia- THANK YOU! I will totally sing the songs with you obnoxiously the next time we're together (which I'm pretty sure will happen to be at Tyler and Nina's wedding... I hear a wedding reception performance of "Without Love" coming on...).

Marie- Yes, I have seen both of those movies, but only once. I have a feeling that I will love The Burbs more and more everytime I watch it. Little Miss Sunshine was good, but I think I should watch it again. And lastly, YES! I'm telling you, you guys must have misjudged it! I am absolutely bringing it to the temple where you and Sarah can objectively decide if you like it or not. And I will try not to sing over the movie because I know how annoying it is.

Sarah Smith- I even love the love song!! :)
